Cachexia

Cachexia is a physical wasting with loss of weight and muscle mass in someone not actively trying to lose weight. Cachexia can be caused by diseases such as AIDS and is characterized by weakness and a loss of weight, fat, and muscle.29

The main symptoms of cachexia are severe loss of weight, including loss of fat and muscle mass, loss of appetite, and weakness.29

A cachexic patient’s body cannot adjust to the lack of nutrients by slowing down the use of absorbed nutrients.29 Instead, the body’s metabolism speeds up so the body burns fat and calories faster. Because the body uses energy more quickly, the patient has severe weight loss, even if they eat regularly. The loss of muscle and fat makes the patients look like they are wasting away.6

Megace ES is used to treat unintended weight loss and cachexia in patients with AIDS. In a 12-week study supporting the approval of Megace ES, most people regained their appetite and increased average caloric intake by approximately one third, based on the recommended daily allowance of 2000 calories per day. Patients gained an average of approximately 11 pounds.1

Taking Megace ES can help stimulate your appetite and increase your daily caloric intake. By increasing your caloric intake, your body gets the nutrients it needs to function. Eating a well-balanced diet will help you regain your weight and increase your energy, which should leave you feeling better.
