What is Malnutrition?
Malnutrition refers to a condition that occurs when the nutrients available to a person’s body are insufficient to meet the body’s needs. Causes of malnutrition may include an inadequate or unbalanced diet, difficulty with digestion, problems absorbing nutrients, or other medical conditions.31
Malnutrition can occur due to lack of a single vitamin in a person’s daily diet or because a person is not getting enough food. Starvation is a form of malnutrition. Malnutrition also occurs when someone eats enough nutrients, but their body does not fully absorb those nutrients.31
Malnutrition, if severe (ie, loss of one third of body proteins in a person of average weight), can lead to serious health problems, and possibly even death.17
